Matting Agent – Precipitated Silca

Matting agents are used to reduce the gloss in a variety of coatings applications. The application segments for silica based matting agents include coil coatings, industrial wood coatings, general industrial and automotive coatings as well as printing inks, leather/textile coatings and decorative coatings. Coil, wood and furniture coatings are the applications with the largest volumes but radiation-cured coatings and other coating systems as well as printing inks also employ silica. The solvent borne paint sector has been more important for silica than waterborne coatings. However, the pressure to reduce VOC emissions and formulate solvent-free paints has led to the development of grades of silica that are suitable for formulation in powder, ultraviolet and waterborne coatings. Efficiency of the matting agent depends on the type of silica, particle size distribution and porosity of the particle. A high porosity is a key feature of a modern matting agent as it enables the formulator to limit the addition rate of a matting agent in a formulation. Unfavorable viscosity effects as well as limitations in surface properties of the coating can be avoided.

Precipitated silica is manufactured by precipitation method. Sodium silicate and mineral acid react under high temperature in alkaline conditions, during which the primary particle is grown rapidly to a diameter of approximately 100nm. Under high shear, precipitated silica can break down, which may affect viscosity and reduce matting performance.

Paint & Ink : Silica flatting and matting agents reduce the gloss of a variety of products including coatings, paints, lacquers, varnishes and inks, while providing lower viscosity and better stir-in capability. A broad array of non-treated and surface treated products, covering a wide range of particle sizes, grind values and surface areas have been designed to lower manufacturing costs through improved incorporation times, dispersion stability and anti-settling behavior in solvent-borne and water-borne coatings.

Lead-Acid Battery Separator Applications : Silica products for polymer-based microporous battery separators, providing manufacturers with a range of products that enable them to lower electrical resistance, increase puncture resistance, improve separator manufacturability and achieve other performance benchmarks.

Synthetic Paper Applications : Synthetic paper, a print material made from plastic rather than wood pulp, is commonly used in applications where the ability to perform in demanding environments is paramount. The precipitated silica is aggregated in a matrix with polyolefin, a thermoplastic polymer, to produce a smooth, yet highly porous printable surface that unites the absorptive capacity and flexibility of precipitated silica with the water- and chemical-resistance of plastic.

Agricultural and Industrial Chemical Applications : Silica carriers enable consistent and high loading of active ingredients and chemicals in pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, fungicides and other agricultural products, and fulfill the same function for chemicals and resins in industrial chemical applications such as rubber, plastics and coatings. silicas provide high absorptivity and chemical compatibility for many active ingredients and liquid chemicals. As a result, they can be used to easily and efficiently convert liquids and other viscous materials into dry, storage-stable, free-flowing powders, which dramatically enhances the ability of manufacturers to efficiently store, move, weigh, dose, blend, and otherwise process additives while reducing scrap and creating a cleaner work environment.
